by Sharis Harmon, Programs Director
Hello L’Arche Tahoma Hope Community!
My name is Sharis Harmon, and I’m delighted to introduce myself as the new Community Programs Director of L’Arche Tahoma Hope. Many of you know me already, but for those who do not, my name is pronounced “Sharis,” rhyming with “Paris,” and my pronouns are she/her. After a year as the Farm Manager, it has been my joy and honor to move into this new position! I’ve spent the past month meeting with community members and partners in anticipation for the launch of some new programs in 2027.
I have been reflecting on the ways that I have been challenged in this new role. The most prominent challenge has been to pause and plan thoughtfully and intentionally about what is ahead in order to create something sustainable and bountiful for us to enjoy together.
Change is inevitable in life and our community knows change all too well. As the hustle and bustle of school, sports and holidays approach us, what does it mean to pause and turn toward the light?
My poet friend James A Pearson wrote:
“Sometimes your next
halting step
is more powerful
than the grandest of vision.
All a leaf knows
About building a tree
Is to turn towards the light.”
“Turning towards the light” for some may mean revisiting personal values. For others, it’s spending time with loved ones, while others may need time alone. I have been turning towards the light of our mission lately:

“To make known the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities, revealed through mutually transforming relationships;
To foster an environment in community that responds to the changing needs of our members, while being faithful to the core values of our founding story;
To engage in our diverse cultures, working together toward a more human society.”
While change is inevitable — one thing that we can count on is our mission. The mission is what guides us, together. It is an invitation to grow with thoughtful intention. Whether it be growing the residential care teams, stepping into a new season on the Farm, finding new funding sources, or building new relationships — the tree will grow! I’m excited to gather at the Harvest of Hope this month to celebrate the changes that we’ve experienced together.
Leana often asks me, “We will keep doing it together, right?”
I’m so grateful to be in a place where we can say, “Yes! We’ll definitely keep doing it together.”
