Mark loves nothing more than having plans. If you’ve met Mark, you’ve been asked that all-important question, “What are you doing tonight?” Turn the tables on Mark and ask that question of him, and he will be happy to tell you about his extensive social life.
Before the effects of COVID-19, thanks to a generous donor Mark and a friend flew to Arizona for a sunny getaway, where he enjoyed attending Mariners Spring Training. During his travels, Mark got an up-close view of something he greatly enjoys watching: airplanes!
Whether it’s the 4th of July air show or an afternoon at the Tacoma Narrows Airport, Mark is drawn to planes. Is it the roar of their engines? The one-of-a-kind views? Or, could it be the promise of connecting to new people and new places?
Staying home and staying safe can feel like the opposite of the potential for adventure that planes offer. But it doesn’t stop friendship and mutual relationship from flourishing in L’Arche homes.
For Mark’s birthday recently, housemates at Anawim transformed their home into an airport. Enter Captain Mark. Mark wore his aviator hat. His presents were located at the “baggage claim.” After a speedy check-in, Mark grabbed his special pre-flight meal.
Finally, it was time for takeoff. Mark took his place in the captain’s chair, his favorite recliner. In front of him, the TV screen displayed the cockpit. Prepare for takeoff!
It’s hard to say who enjoyed the birthday celebration the most – Mark, or his housemates. Which goes to show that even when our social life is temporarily limited to our closest circle of friends and companions, our spirits can still take flight.
