Cindy uses her voice for a lot of things: free-style rapping at talent shows, cheering on the Seahawks, making new friends, or volunteering on the auction committee. She never seems to be at a loss for words.
Cindy often uses her voice to check up on others in the community. It’s not uncommon for Cindy to appear at a window of the L’Arche main offices to ask, “You’re not working too hard, are you? You should probably take a break.” And, you know what? She’s right. Whether we realize it or not.
One day Cindy didn’t consider that I’d be in a meeting when she popped over for a visit. No bother, Cindy simply greeted me and my guest. “Hello, I’m Cindy.” Of course, her visit was the highlight of the meeting.
It’s not easy to admit to myself or to others that at times these check-ins can feel like a distraction. I just want to finish my work and do a good job. If I had just a little more time to focus without interruption, I could really get my work done to benefit the community.
But this simply isn’t true.
Being in relationship is at the heart of L’Arche. Cindy invites me to remember that I can’t always do the work on my own. No matter how hard I try. Cindy wants to invite all L’Arche members and friends to support one another, no matter what. “Check up on your friends, even if you think they’re busy.” You might just be the welcome distraction they need.
