by Laura Giddings and Kayleigh Harper
Doug is known at L’Arche for loving to help and for being a hard worker. He’s also recognized for his ability to just kick back and enjoy life. Kayleigh recently had a chance to hang out with Doug and ask him a few questions.
So, Doug, what do your days look like?
I sleep in, I make breakfast. I sit in my chair and watch TV. Relax in my pajamas and kick my feet up.
What are ways you like to help around the house?
I mow the lawn, take out the recycling, help with setting the table for dinner.
What has changed since the virus started? What do you miss?
I miss riding my bike to the grocery store to buy a Diet Coke. I miss going bowling and seeing friends at Catholic Worker. I hope they are all staying safe. I miss working on the Farm, going to markets, and having responsibilities.
What has brought you joy in this time?
I got to mow the backyard and seed up some sunflowers. We set up bowling in Farmhouse one day. I call my friends to check in, and I like all the Zoom meetings with the community. We had fun at Easter.
How’re you helping your housemates through this time?
Going on walks, watching movies together.
What is the first thing you want to do when the virus is gone?
Ride my bike to the store!!!
