The Fr. James Boyle Endowment Fund
About Fr. Jim
There are few people in the Puget Sound area who have dedicated their lives to persons with intellectual disabilities as deeply as Fr. Jim Boyle. Fr. Jim first spent time with people with intellectual disabilities during the late 1960s when he was the Assistant Pastor at All Saints Church in Puyallup and he would visit Rainier School, the local institution. When Fr. Jim was appointed pastor of St. Aloyosius Church in Buckley, he began a spiritual life program for the residents of Rainier School. Over the years, many volunteers worked closely with Fr. Jim to make the spiritual life program a life-giving and supportive program at Rainier.
As L’Arche Tahoma Hope began, Fr. Jim became close to the community and moved into Hilltop House to share his life with persons with intellectual disabilities. Fr. Jim was instrumental in promoting the Faith and Sharing Retreats and, in 1979, he was key in organizing a retreat that brought Jean Vanier (founder of L’Arche) to Seattle. Fr. Jim continued to direct Faith and Sharing retreats throughout his life.
Later in life, Fr. Jim was a spiritual guide for L’Arche Tahoma Hope. Fr. Jim died in January, 2012 from complications resulting from surgery. Because Fr. Jim was such an inspiration throughout his life and gave so much of himself in service to persons with intellectual disabilities, L’Arche Tahoma Hope is proud to name the Endowment Fund in his memory.
What is an Endowment Fund?
An endowment fund helps provide for the continuing support of an organization. The endowment principal is placed in safe investments, and the interest accrued is used as income for the organization. Limits are set on withdrawing from the endowment principal to ensure the stability of the endowment fund.
Thus, contributions to endowment funds are lasting gifts that help provide an ongoing source of revenue. The greater the principal amount in an endowment fund, the more income an organization is able to earn each year.
